I am blown away that as a nurse for over 23 years today, I have served hundreds to thousands of people directly and indirectly in their hours of need and illness.
People’s assumptions that I am in my 20s astound me.I can’t help but smile when I see the ‘wow’ on their faces when they learn my real age.
Long hours on my feet, caring for patients, and managing emergencies came with a heavy price. The juggle of being a single mom to two pre-teens, and my life often felt like a race I couldn’t win.
I felt guilty every time I missed a school event or was too tired to make dinner. The demands of my nursing work pulled me in one direction, while my heart yearned to be with my children and listen to all their stories. I wanted to quit so many times. In my mind, I handed in my resignation letter many times. But every time, the reality of needing to care for my kids would bring me back to the grind.
Burnout crept in over the years, and I felt as though a shadow of myself. My energy was drained, and striving to be everything for everyone left little time to take care of me. This brought great stress.
